The Iris Cup Competition 2008 - Interpretive Floral Design

The contest will be held at the TSFA Convention/CTPFA Christmas Show, Franklin Marriott Cool Springs, Franklin, TN on Friday, August 1, 2008 from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M.

 

1.        Contest is open to any active member of Tennessee State Florists’ Association or any employee of an active member shop.

2.        An employee must have been employed full-time (full-time is 30 working hours a week) by an active member’s shop for at least six consecutive months prior to the competition.  Employment by an active member shop is not limited to the same shop within the six months.  The employer or entrant must verify by employer’s signature on the entry form that contestant has met this criteria.

3.        Each contestant will interpret a given work of art with a design of all fresh flowers and materials.  A picture of the art work to be interpreted will be sent to each contestant.

4.        Each contestant will provide all flowers, greens and materials needed for the competition.  Props and accessories are permitted.  The size of the design must not exceed 48” in width and 48” in depth.  There is no height restriction.  Any design, including prop and table or stand, not within the given dimensions will be disqualified.

5.        Each contestant must design the entry on site.  An hour (9:00 A.M. – 10:00 A.M.) prep time will be given each contestant prior to the start of the contest to assemble props and containers, insert floral foam, place soil, sand or rocks within the design, cut flowers and foliages to length for insertion.  Wiring and taping of individual stems is allowed during the prep time, no assembly of cascades, clusters or composite flowers will be allowed.  No organic material such as fresh flowers, foliages, moss, branches, etc., of any type can be added to or attached to any prop or container and no floral foam can be added to any prop or container prior to 9:00 A.M., the start of the prep time.  No flowers or materials can be added to the floral foam prior to 10:00 A.M., the start of the contest.  A member of the Iris Cup Committee will inspect each work area prior to the official start of the contest.  If assistance is needed during the prep time or the contest, it can only be provided by the Iris Cup Committee.

6.        To complete the designs, all contestants must bring necessary tools:  Scissors, knife, wire, tape, etc.

7.        The Iris Cup Committee will select the required number of spaces for the competition and will number each space.  The committee will place the number for each space in a sealed envelope.

8.        Contestants are asked to report to the Iris Cup Chairman thirty minutes prior to the prep time of the contest for briefing.  Each contestant will draw a sealed envelope containing a numbered space.  The contestants will draw in alphabetical order.  A master sheet containing each contestant’s name and selected number will be retained by the Iris Cup Chairman.  No other person will have access to this document.  Employees and family members of the Iris Cup Committee members are ineligible to compete.

9.        Judging will be immediately following the competition.  The judges will consist of art critics and floral designers.  The judges will have access to the judges tally sheet only, judging each design for its individual merit.  Upon completion each judge will place all his/her notes in an envelope and give it to the Iris Cup Chairman.

10.     A total point system will be used, with a possible 100 points given each entry by each judge.  Interpretation of Artwork 25 points, Physical and Visual Balance 25 points, Mechanics and Workmanship 25 points and Overall Impression 25 points.  The winner will be selected by adding the scores, with the Iris Cup being awarded to the contestant with the highest number of points.  The contestant with the second highest points will be the first runner-up and the contestant with the third highest points will be the second runner-up.  The Iris Cup Committee will tabulate the results of the judges scores and will retain the information until the awards presentation.

11.     The winner will receive $500.00, the Iris Cup Trophy to retain for one year and a plaque, the first runner-up will receive $250.00 and a plaque and the second runner-up will receive $100.00 and a plaque.

12.     All entries must be postmarked no later than Monday, July 21, 2008.

13.     Each contestant will be notified when their application has been received.

14.     Each contestant must have a full registration for the convention and will be responsible for their personal TSFA Convention expenses.
